Is cheese a vegan?
The answer to whether or not cheese is vegan depends on the type of cheese and how it’s made. Traditional, animal-based cheeses are not considered vegan because they contain milk, which comes from animals. However, there are some plant-based alternatives to dairy cheese that are suitable for those following a vegan diet. These alternative cheeses are typically made with ingredients like nuts, seeds, soy, and tapioca, and often have similar textures and flavors to their dairy counterparts. Additionally, some artisanal cheesemakers are now creating “accidentally vegan” cheeses by using traditional methods but substituting non-dairy milks in the process. So while most cheese is not vegan, there are certainly more options available than ever before for those who choose to avoid animal products.
